On September 12th the Big Land Fair was held at the E.J. Broomfield Memorial Arena. The Central Labrador Environmental Action Network, CLEAN, had a very successful information booth at the fair, distributing information on composting and how to build your own backyard composter as well has general information on CLEAN and its mission in Upper Lake Melville.

On April 22, under an overcast sky, a small but dedicated group of individuals participated in CLEAN’s second annual Earth Day walk. The grade three classes of Peacock Academy had planned to attend but did not come because of weather concerns. However several members of the community came to show their support for the environment. The walk, meant to encourage individuals to drive less and walk/bike more began at the Elizabeth Goudie building and ended at the North Star building where participants were offered refreshments.

Prepare to Compost
CLEAN has just received funding for Compost Away, a year long program where compostables will be picked up from local businesses and other institutions and taken to Birch Lane farm. The goal of the program is to divert ten or more tons of organic waste from the municpal landfill by its completion in April 2010. Anyone who is interested or has any questions should contact CLEAN.

CLEAN is currently working on a Green Guide for Upper Lake Melville; a booklet of tips and information about how to live environmentally friendly in Labrador. Within the next year or so, it will be distributed free of charge to all the households in the Upper Lake Melville Region. We are currently seeking sponsors for this project. CLEAN is coming out with a Green Guide to provide easy tips and pointers for individuals, families, and businesses to reduce their impact on the environment and save money. The Green Guide will be given as a free gift to every home in Mud Lake, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Sheshatshit, and North West River.
